The General Missionary Department of The Churches of Christ in Christian Union (CCCU) is pleased to announce the release of Close Enough to Hear His Voice - a new book honoring the legacy of Mary Johnson, the denomination’s first international missionary. Authored by Mike Brown, a missionary serving in Bolivia with CCCU and World Gospel Mission, the biography offers a compelling look at Johnson’s extraordinary life and ministry in India, on the Texas-Mexico Border, and beyond.
The 104-page paperback explores the faith, determination, and cross-cultural impact of a pioneering woman whose obedience to God’s call helped lay the foundation for CCCU's global missions movement. Drawing from historical documents, personal effects, and archival photos, Brown paints a vivid portrait of Johnson’s sacrificial service during a time when international missions were both rare and arduous.
“Mary Johnson was a trailblazer whose life still speaks powerfully to us today,” said Rev. Michael Tipton, General Missionary Superintendent. “This book not only preserves her story but inspires a new generation to consider the call of God in missions.”
Author Mike Brown brings a unique perspective to the project, combining his passion for missionary service with years of firsthand experience on the mission field. “Mary’s story deserves to be known and remembered,” Brown said. “She faced challenges most of us can’t imagine today, yet she remained faithful. I’m honored to help share her legacy.”
The book is available now through the CCCU website, with plans for wider distribution at denominational events, missions conferences, and more.
